What is C2PA metadata?
C2PA is the open standard behind Content Credentials, created by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (Adobe, Microsoft, Google, the BBC and others). It adds a signed record, a manifest, inside an image or video file. The manifest lists which app made or edited the file, the actions taken, the files it was built from and, since generative AI arrived, whether an AI feature was used.

You never see the manifest in a photo viewer, but platforms do. Instagram, Facebook and Threads turn it into “AI info”, YouTube into “altered or synthetic content”, and LinkedIn into a small CR icon on your post.
Who created C2PA, and how it spread
C2PA didn’t come from one company. It was built by the tech and news industry to answer a simple question in the age of deepfakes: where did this picture come from? Here’s how it got from a press release to your phone’s camera:
- November 2019Adobe, The New York Times and Twitter announce the Content Authenticity Initiative, to develop an industry standard for showing who made a piece of content.
- In parallelMicrosoft and the BBC run Project Origin, focused on tracing where news media comes from.
- February 2021The two efforts merge into the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), founded by Adobe, Arm, the BBC, Intel, Microsoft and Truepic.
- End of 2021The first C2PA specification is published: the technical rules for signing and embedding a manifest in a file.
- October 2023The Leica M11-P becomes the first camera to write Content Credentials straight from the sensor.
- 2024Meta and OpenAI adopt C2PA (February), Sony cameras follow (March), LinkedIn starts showing the CR icon (May), and Google and Amazon join in the same year.
- 2025Phones join in: Samsung’s Galaxy S25 marks AI-edited photos, and the Google Pixel 10 camera signs its pictures.
- TodayC2PA is run as an open standard under the Joint Development Foundation, with its steering committee now including Adobe, Microsoft, Google, Meta, OpenAI, Amazon, Sony and the BBC.
The intent is good: honest provenance for journalism and a way to spot fakes. The side effect is the one this page is about: real photos and videos with a single AI touch-up get labelled like fully generated ones.
Can C2PA be removed?
Yes. For all its signatures, a C2PA manifest is still metadata: a block of data stored next to the image or video, not painted into it. Take the block out and the picture is exactly the same, just without the record. In a JPEG it lives in APP11 segments, in a PNG in its own chunk, and in MP4 and MOV videos in a dedicated box.
Signed doesn’t meanstuck to the pixels.
The signature proves the record wasn’t altered. It doesn’t stop you from removing the whole record from your own file. Why people remove it from their own work: the manifest can carry names, device details and full edit histories, and a single AI step, like removing a cable with Generative Fill, is enough for a real photo or video to be labelled as AI across social media.
Why removing C2PA alone isn’t always enough
Most C2PA removers stop at the manifest. But many editing apps write the AI fact twice: once in the C2PA manifest and once in the IPTC “digital source type” field of the regular metadata. Platforms read both.
| What’s in the file | C2PA-only remover | MetaClean |
|---|---|---|
| C2PA manifest (Content Credentials) | Removed | Removed |
| IPTC digital source type: AI | Often left behind | Removed |
| XMP edit history naming AI tools | Often left behind | Removed |
| GPS, camera and device details | Varies | Your choice |
| Colour profile and orientation | Sometimes lost | Kept |
So if you stripped C2PA and your post still says “AI info”, the IPTC tag is the usual culprit.
How to remove C2PA metadata from a photo or video
Whether you want to remove Content Credentials from image files, remove C2PA from image exports or clean a video in the same folder, the steps are identical:
- 1
Drop in the file or a folder
JPG, PNG, MP4 or MOV, straight from Photoshop, Lightroom, Firefly, Premiere Pro, your phone or an AI tool.
- 2
See the Content Credentials
MetaClean lists the manifest in plain words: which app signed it, the actions, whether AI was used, plus the IPTC tag and the rest of the metadata.
- 3
Choose Credentials only
It removes the C2PA manifest and every AI marker, and keeps everything else. Pick Privacy clean to also remove location and device details.
- 4
Save the verified copy
MetaClean writes the clean copy, reads it back to confirm no credentials remain, and leaves your original untouched.
How to check the Content Credentials are gone
MetaClean re-inspects every file it saves, so a clean copy is only written when the credentials are really gone. If you want a second opinion, use the official Content Credentials Verify tool:
Before
Drop the original into contentcredentials.org/verify. It shows the signer, the app, the edit actions and an AI marker.
After
Drop the clean copy in. The verify tool reports that no Content Credentials were found.
How to remove Content Credentials on LinkedIn
LinkedIn marks images that carry Content Credentials with a small CR icon. To remove CR from image posts, clean the file with MetaClean and upload the clean copy: the icon that appeared on the original upload does not appear on the clean one.
Online C2PA removers vs MetaClean
Most C2PA tools you’ll find in search are websites. They work, but they handle the job differently:
| Online C2PA remover | MetaClean | |
|---|---|---|
| Your file is uploaded | Usually | Never |
| Videos (MP4, MOV) | Rarely | Yes, any size |
| IPTC AI tag removed too | Rarely | Yes |
| Clean copy verified | No | Every file |
| A whole folder at once | One by one | Yes |

Removing C2PA and Content Credentials
C2PA and Content Credentials: your questions
Can C2PA be removed?
Yes. A C2PA manifest (Content Credentials) is metadata stored inside the file, next to the image or video data. Removing it leaves the picture itself untouched. MetaClean removes it from a copy of your photo or video and checks that the clean copy no longer carries any credentials.
How do I remove C2PA metadata from a photo?
Open the photo in MetaClean on your Mac or Windows PC, choose Credentials only (or Privacy clean to also drop location and camera details) and save. MetaClean writes a clean copy next to the original, with no C2PA manifest and no IPTC AI tag.
What is C2PA?
C2PA (the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) is the standard behind Content Credentials: a signed record inside a file that lists the tools used to make or edit it, including AI features. Adobe apps, AI image and video tools, some cameras and phones write it; Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn read it.
Who created C2PA?
C2PA was founded in February 2021 by Adobe, Arm, the BBC, Intel, Microsoft and Truepic. It merged two earlier efforts: the Content Authenticity Initiative that Adobe launched with The New York Times and Twitter in November 2019, and Project Origin, run by Microsoft and the BBC. Google, Meta, OpenAI, Amazon and Sony have since joined its steering committee.
Is removing C2PA enough to avoid AI labels?
Not always on its own. Many editors also write an IPTC “digital source type” tag that says AI was used, and platforms read that too. MetaClean removes both in one pass, which is why a C2PA-only stripper can still leave a real photo labelled.
Does removing Content Credentials change my image?
No. The manifest sits beside the image data. MetaClean copies the pixels, colour profile and orientation across unchanged; for videos the video and audio streams are copied without re-encoding.
Can I remove C2PA from videos?
Yes. MP4 and MOV files can carry Content Credentials too, for example after Premiere Pro's Generative Extend. MetaClean removes them from videos of any size without re-encoding.
How do I check that the C2PA data is gone?
MetaClean re-inspects every clean copy before saving it. You can double-check by dropping the clean file into the Content Credentials Verify tool at contentcredentials.org/verify: it will report that no Content Credentials were found.
How do I remove the CR icon on LinkedIn?
LinkedIn shows the small “CR” icon when an uploaded image carries Content Credentials. Clean the image with MetaClean and upload the clean copy; with no manifest in the file, there is nothing for LinkedIn to show.
Is there a free online C2PA remover?
There are online tools, but they need you to upload your photo to their server first, most handle images only and few remove the IPTC AI tag as well. MetaClean works offline on photos and videos: free for 3 days, then $5 once.
